Full disclosure, I am a member of the Lynnwood Brewing Run Club, and its founder, Rebecca Clowes, is a good friend of mine.  Who better to tell you about a run club than someone who loves it and participates in it?

The following interview questions were answered by Rebecca. Rebecca is a dedicated runner who also dabbles in brewing her own beer, so founding a brew pub run club was a natural fit for her!

Where did the idea for the Lynnwood Run Club originate?

R.C. : A good runner friend of mine, Karen Mills, and I were at Lynnwood Grill celebrating the end of another fantastic training season.  She and I have trained together for a few years and have become good training partners and friends.  While at Lynnwood Grill, the owner of the restaurant and brewery stopped by our table and, after some friendly conversations with our friends, Karen mentioned to the owner that she thought he needed a run club at his brewery.  He nodded in agreement, I got very excited about that idea and agreed as well.  We talked about how many breweries in the area have run clubs and how well received they are.  Prior to leaving our conversation, the owner handed me his business card and suggested that if I was serious about wanting a run club, to contact him.  The idea was very appealing to me and after chatting with Karen about it, I reached out to the owner and got the ball rolling.

What drew you to Lynnwood Brewing Concern as a place for the run club to call home?

R.C. : The conversation with the owner of Lynnwood Brewing Concern was random and unplanned but my love for LBC is a long time influence.  I’ve lived near Lynnwood Grill for over 10 years and have always been a fan of what they do and their beer.  I was very excited about their expansion into Lynnwood Brewing Concern.  With my love of running and its fantastic relationship with beer, the idea of starting a run club at Lynnwood Brewing Concern was an absolute perfect fit for me.

Was anyone else involved in the birth of the club?

R.C. : Karen Mills has been my co-host of LBC Run Club.  In addition to being there at run club and covering for me whenever I have a conflict, she is one of those fantastic friendly people that makes new people joining the group feel welcome.  She makes the group organization easier for me and a whole lot of fun for everyone!

How did you decide on a route for the run?

R.C. : I did a lot of mapping and running in the area before picking our routes.  As we all know, you can’t run in Raleigh without running some hills but I was trying to keep the hills on our route reasonable so the route would appeal to all running levels.  There are hills on our routes which keeps it challenging but I also wanted the route to be good for beginners and new runners to Raleigh.  After running through many of the neighborhoods around LBC, I found two routes (a 3 mile and a 5 mile) that run through some beautiful neighborhoods, stay interesting and keep a few hills to make it fun and a little challenging.

How many routes/distances does the club run?

R.C. : We have a 3 and 5 mile route in the neighborhoods around LBC.  The first ~2 miles share the same route and then the 5 mile route continues through a few neighborhoods (and past two more breweries).  Many of our runners, as they are training for upcoming races, will come early and run additional miles in the area before run club.  The area is runnable and easy to add some mileage.

When was the club’s first official run?

R.C. : The first Lynnwood Brewing Run Club run was on January 20, 2016.

Happy Birthday, LBC Run Club!

What day of the week and at what time does the club run?

R.C. : We meet every Wednesday at 6:30 pm at LBC!

How many participants come out each week, on average?

R.C. : We are a small, growing group and the participation varies.  We have a core group of 8-10 runners on average.

Are there any incentives for running at Lynnwood?

R.C. : As part of the Lynnwood Run Club, there are incentives for attendance.  After attending 10 runs, you earn a LBC Run Club tech shirt.  After attending 25 runs, you earn a LBC Run Club pint glass.  And after attending 50 runs, you earn a LBC Run Club next level tech shirt.

There are always drink specials and food trucks at the brewery on Wednesdays for runners to take advantage of as well.

Does Lynnwood provide any extra things that run club members may take advantage of?

R.C. : There are a lot of events that go on at LBC every day that runners can take advantage of. There are drink specials and food trucks at the brewery each day that runners can participate in.  There are also a lot of events – such as charity events, dog adoption events, etc that often occur on Wednesdays that runners are able to participate in.

Does the run club do anything together outside of the weekly runs?

R.C. :  Many of the runners at LBC run together outside of the Wednesday run club night. As many of our runners are training for various races, many have become friends and started training on weekends and other nights together.  We also often run several of the local races together as another fun event to do together.  We’ve run together for the Tar Heel 10 miler, the St. Paddy’s Run and the Oktoberfest Run in Raleigh.  We just put together a team and plan to run the Tuna 200 Run this October as well!

What ideas do you have for the future of the club?

R.C. :  I would like to see the run club continue to grow its membership and become a bigger community of runners.  Raleigh has such a fantastic running community and we’ve built a great, although small, running group here at LBC.  I would love to see that great, supportive, friendly community grow here.

How can people find the Lynnwood Run Club on social media?

R.C. : Check us out on Facebook (Lynnwood Brewing Run Club). That’s the best way to be up to date on weekly runs, upcoming events and pictures from our runs!
